Shelta Umbrella
Umbrellas: Ladies, do/did you have a favourite? Do you remember your first one?
My first umbrella was a vivid red Shelta, great size and shape, one of those that folded and collapsed into a mushroom shape. I was given it as a birthday present when I turned 13. It lasted all through high school and university and I found it was just the right size for two to walk under, as long as they stayed close, an important consideration then!
I have generally used red umbrellas since, the one I mainly use now (30 years later) is a fair replica of my first one. I have also had royal blue ones, a burgundy one for a while, and I had one of those bubble-shaped plastic ones that everybody had in the 70s and they are massively over rated, they're good for a giggle and they're fun but in practical terms they're not well designed to walk under, especially if you're on the tall side like me, and they don't cover an area as big as they look. But I see they're coming back into fashion and now my daughter wants one.
I have always favored bold patterns. The one I use now is full size, dark royal blue with rown of pink cabbage roses going round. I love it but my daughter (14) hates it, she has a classic plain dark blue one which does suit her well, and she's one of the few girls in her circle who uses a brolly voluntarily at all.
The other day I was shopping with a girl-friend who's going back to work after having a child. It was a wet day and we both had umbrellas with us, I had the one I described, she had a nice deep burgundy model. She stopped to look at black umbrellas, saying she needed a 'work umbrella' to be a convincing 'femo corporatus'. I asked her what was wrong with the one she had. She laughed and said what the hell, you're right, and eventually we spent the money on another bottle of wine with lunch instead. It's real shame that working women still feel they have to out-anal the men in matters like this. I think black umbrellas are so depressing.
