Umbrella Cockatoo dilemma?
Recently I ended up fostering an umberlla cockatoo taking her from a bad home. She is 7 and seems like a sweet bird. I already have a quaker and I am mostly concerned with the dander and such this species produces since I am a allergy prone individual. (The pollen this season is killing me!) Also I have read a lot of horrible things about cockatoos and I am afriad with work full time I will not be able to spend enough time with this bird, although she will be well t careed for. So my question is, should I try and find her a good home or will my cockatoo horror story of feather picking and screaming come true if I keep her?
To control dander get a 20 inch box fan ($12) and 20 X 20
AC filter ($4.00 for a four pk) put one filter behind the fan and
turn the fan on low and place it somewhere out of the way. This will remove a lot of dust from your
house.
Once a week give the bird a bath and use a hair dryer on cool
out side and that should take care of most of the dander.
Put things (toys) in the cage for her to play with. A empty water bottle with the cap on is a favorite for many also any thing that shakes or rattles. Something they can take apart.
They also like shredding paper.
I have used the hair-dryer for 10 years on all species of birds and haven't found a dead one yet.
